Analyze and optimize
An analytics tool is a tool that collects and compiles data and traffic on your website and allows you to view the information visually. The purpose of using an analysis tool may be to gain valuable insights about its users.
You can use an analysis tool to see, for example, how many unique visitors your website has or how often they visit specific pages. You can also use the information to gain valuable insights about your visitors and create a better user experience for them.
It can be valuable to know how many unique visitors your website has and how your visitors interact with your website. In an analytics tool, you can see information about, among other things
- date and time of unique visits
- the number of interactions for each visit (how many times the visitor clicked or did something else on your website)
- how long the visitor spent on your website
- which country your visitor is located in
- which browser and operating system your user has
- whether the visitor is new to the website or has visited it before
how the visitor found your website (via a search engine using specific keywords, via a link from another website, etc.).
Use of search terms
If you want your users to find what they are looking for quickly and navigate your website more easily, an analysis tool can be a great help. The words and terms visitors use when searching for specific information may be worth keeping in mind when naming your pages, but also when optimising your website for search engines.
Analysis tools for those who have a website in Drupal
The university collective web solution includes the option of using an analysis tool. The analysis tool used is Matomo, which has the same (and additional) functionality as the previous tool, Google Analytics, but which primarily meets the GDPR requirements for the lawful processing and storage of personal data.
Matomo
Matomo is an analytics tool and a leading platform for web analytics. The tool has over a million users in more than 190 countries and has become a strong alternative to the world's most widely used analytics tool, Google Analytics. Matomo has attracted particular attention due to its ability to protect visitors' privacy.
GDPR compliant and built on open source code
Matomo enables everyone who works with the analysis tool to comply with the legal requirements for storing personal data. Matomo ensures this by installing and maintaining the tool on its own servers or purchasing the tool from a supplier that provides the analysis solution in a manner that complies with the GDPR.
Matomo is a well-established and stable open-source solution. Matomo is already used for Lund University's blogs in Wordpress, but also by several other organisations in the public sector.
We do not offer support in the tool
Matomo is not covered by the support included in the web solution. However, we are happy to provide tips on where you can find useful information on how to use Matomo.

Whitespace
We have gained access to the Whitespace Knowledge Bank and their guides on Matomo and web analytics.
To gain access, simply register via this link: https://analys.whitespace.se/ > Wait for the email > Click on the link in the email > and you will have access to the guides.
You perform the same process every time you want to access the guides.
Once you have been invited to Matomo, you will receive an email with an invitation that is valid for 7 days. After you have accepted the invitation and registered as a user, you will find the login at https://webbanalys.sgit.se/lu/matomo/index.php fortsättningsvis. You need to be at Lund University, either on site or via VPN, to access the login.
You log in to Matomo using Lund University's CAS login, which is the login used for most of LU's systems. You log in with your usual Lucat ID and chosen password..
The tool is provided and operated by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency as part of a government assignment to offer coordinated and secure IT operations for certain authorities. Therefore, when logging in, users will be directed to a page featuring the Swedish Social Insurance Agency's green colour scheme with the heading "Coordinated and secure government IT operations". Everything is as it should be! Then you will be redirected to Matomo.
Matomo also offers equivalents to the features you had access to in Google Analytics. In addition, there are a number of features that you may find useful in your work with your website(s). Below are examples of some of these features.
Heat map & session recording
When you use Heat maps, you get a map of how your visitors use your website. With the help of colour clusters, you can see where the visitor clicked, how far down the page they scrolled, and how they moved their pointer. Session recording allows you to record how the user behaves during a session (a visit) on your website. This feature is particularly useful for those who want to obtain valuable insights into how their website performs from a user perspective.
Read more about Heat maps and session recording on Matomo's website.
Users flow
With the help of User Flow, you can generate a visualisation of user flow. This means that you can gain valuable insights into how your visitors have navigated your website.

Search Engine Keywords Performance
Use this feature to gain insight into which search terms your visitors use to find your website. You can use this information, for example, when naming your categories and pages, or to optimise your website for search engines by using popular search terms in keywords.
Read more about Search Engine Keywords Performance on Matomo's website.
Custom reports
Create reports on your website traffic and visitor usage with Custom reports. You can customise the reports yourself and base them on different variables and measurements that you select yourself.

If you are responsible for a website in Drupal, you will receive your user account in Matomo from us. When you log in to Matomo as a site administrator, you can also add more publishers as users linked to the site you are responsible for. On this page, you will find information about how to add new users with different permissions and what the different permissions mean.
Create user
As a website administrator in Matomo, you can invite users to your website and assign them a permission level. You can add multiple users, and each user can have access to multiple websites. To create a new user, follow the instructions below.
1. Go to the left-hand menu and select "Users" > "Manage users".
2. Click on the "Invite a new user" button.
3. In the form, enter the person's Lucat ID as the username, the person's email address, and the website to which the user should have access. In this step, you can only give the person access to one website. If you want to add more websites, do so after you have finished creating the new user by following the instructions in Add existing users to a website.
4. Check that you have entered the correct Lucat ID and other details, then click on "Invite user".
An email will now be sent to the new user and you will be redirected to the "Edit user" form where you can now select permissions.
Edit users and select permissions
You cannot edit basic information such as email addresses or passwords, but you can edit user permission levels. Before doing so, you need to know what permissions are available and what they mean. You can also edit users by selecting "Edit" in the user list view.
View
Users can view statistics and reports from all plugins, but they cannot edit anything or create new reports. They cannot edit or delete content, settings or users in any way.
Writer
Just like with "View", users can see statistics and all reports. They can also create new content, reports and settings, as well as update and delete existing ones. However, they cannot manage users and do not have the ability to edit, delete or create new users.
Admin
Users can do all of the above, and they can also edit website settings such as name, URL, and time zone. They can also delete reports, content, and visitor statistics. Finally, they can manage users by creating new ones, editing them, and assigning permission levels.
Select the permissions the user should have
- Select the relevant website in the upper part of the list view, under "Role for".
- To the right of the relevant user, click on the drop-down menu and select the appropriate permission.
Add existing users to a website
You can add an existing user to a website by clicking on the button labelled "Users" in the left-hand menu, then selecting "Manage users". Next, click on "Add existing user".
Important!
This adds a user to the site selected in the list view under "Role for". Make sure you have the correct site selected, if you have multiple sites, before selecting "Add existing user". The user will automatically be assigned the "View" permission. Finally, enter their username (Lucat ID) and click "Add".
